Words for the tombstone

October's Writing Experiment

Hi Reader,

Does it feel like someone's got their foot on the accelerator right now? I saw Christmas decorations in Costco! Ack.

There's a lot for you in this Writing Practices:

  • A fun, Halloween-themed writing experiment that I think you'll enjoy
  • Audiobook news
  • An invitation to contribute to a survey on writing and AI
  • A reminder about a free Writing Summit happening today

Let's dive in!

Craft a pithy epitaph

October's writing experiment involves crafting a humorous epitaph for a tombstone. Read the post to see how it works.

Or,

Want to share? If you think this community of writerly people would enjoy your tombstone text, send it to me and I'll share it in the mid-October email! I would love to see what you come up with.

Here's mine:

Hallelujah, the audiobook is here!

After months of languishing in the bowels of ACX, the audiobook of the new version of The Writer's Process finally found its way into Audible.

If you're an Audible listener, you can find it there (search Writer's Process Janzer to see both editions). Be sure to look for small black flag in the upper right corner, indicating the new, revised edition.

Despite repeated requests, Audible has not removed the earlier version.

And a favor request: If you listen to the new version on Audible, can you leave a review or star rating? With enough positive reviews, Amazon might start serving the new version ahead of the old one. One can dream!

AI and writing survey

My friend Josh Bernoff is running the second annual survey of how writers use AI in their work. If you're an author, journalist, copywriter, ghostwriter, technical writer, or editor, you can help by filling it out, even if you never use it.

The survey doesn't take long to complete, and the insights will be valuable for all of us. Take the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/AIWPjanz

My "willpower alternatives" talk happens today

You've already gotten a couple emails from me about the Write Anyway Summit. It started Monday and goes on through tomorrow, Thursday.

You can watch any of the scheduled sessions free during the conference (in your sweatpants digging into the Halloween candy in advance, if that's your thing).

Check out the conference here.

My session is about alternatives to relying on willpower—I'm pretty proud of it! It happens today at 3pm Pacific, 6pm Eastern, so you can watch it live for no cost.

And, if you missed a session that looks interested, you can get the All Access Pass.

Remember, if you come up with a good epitaph or two, please send them along so I can share them next time.

Hey Reader, Are you finding the AI news getting to be a little much? Some days I feel like like hiding from it all. It's hard to avoid both the news and AI itself. I find solace in writing done the old-fashioned way. You know, with organic intelligence. A low-tech way to get unstuck Sure, it seems magical when AI delivers an answer to a question or starts something for us. But it’s even more magical when we discover the answers knocking around in our own heads. This week's post: query...

An exercise to help you stretch your voice Hi Reader, August is nothing more than a misty vision in the rearview mirror as we accelerate into September. Are you ready? Summer has left its mark on me, as this month's Writing Experiment was inspired by both an interaction with my grandson on vacation and a friend's book recommendation. So, here I am turning summer ponderings into autumn blog posts. Let's dive right in. Read a poem first A while back, my friend Ben Riggs recommended that I read...

In which we learn to restrain our packing tendencies Hi Reader, I just returned from a lovely trip with my family. And, assessing my luggage on unpacking, I can report that I came pretty close to packing the right amount of stuff. That's a small victory! And the experience inspired the theme of this week's post—overpacking. Before we get to the post, I want to pack in a few other things: The August give-away: Learning that Lasts While I'm pretty good about being concise in writing, when it...
