Writing Practices: The gift of writing

Using your words to strengthen connections

Happy December, Reader.

As 2024 draws to a close. I’m already planning what do to more and less of in 2025.

On the more list:

  • Time in nature
  • Time with my grandchild
  • Coaching nonfiction authors creating meaningful books
  • Essays, articles, and other non-book writing

Most of all, I want to spend more time and effort cultivating and maintaining meaningful connections, in person and through writing. Because, in my world, writing is all about connecting.

When we write books and blog posts (like this one), we hope our ideas land with many people. That's a challenge. Connecting with a single person may be just as important, and certainly easier to manage.

That’s the theme of December’s Writing Yoga challenge. I really hope that you try this one.

Writing Yoga: The gift of writing

This month, I offer three ways to use your writing as a gift to others. They may not take much time, and the gift rebounds on you.

Need ideas for books to give as gifts?

If your list includes nonfiction readers, check out the list of recommendations offered by readers in the Nonfiction Book Survey.

And, what better companion for the avid nonfiction reader than The Curious Reader's Field Guide to Nonfiction? The reading nerds in your life may love it!

Talking nonfiction on the Author-U Podcast

Judith Briles hosts a lovely podcast for authors, called Author-U. (She and I have chatted there multiple times.) I joined her recently to talk about writing nonfiction, inspired by The Curious Readers' Field Guide to Nonfiction. We had a fun and wide-ranging conversation.

Find it in all the usual places, or online here.

That is all for now—I'll be back in two weeks with a book give-away to inpire your year ahead.

It's time for another writing voice exercise Dear Reader, In working with nonfiction authors, I often recommend they break up a few long sentences to aid comprehension or change the rhythm of the work. If you live firmly in the "long sentences best serve my work" camp, beware. Too many long sentences can get in the way of comprehension, and then your relationship with the reader suffers. (No one wants to read a sentence twice to understand it.) This month, I invite you to attention to your...

But our writing also serves ourselves. If uncertainty is getting you down, try writing through it. Come up with different scenarios and play them out. Most writers I know are...
